Johnathan Edwards and the Love of God
Most Christians know of Jonathan Edwards and may have heard a quote or two of his. And they’ve been encouraged to read his writings. But he’s really hard to read. So getting help from George Marsden a great historian and biographer is key. This podcast digs into Edwards and what Marsden helps us see clearly.

Very good! Very good! Very helpful .and brings out the positivity of the Gospel for our lives in devotion to Christ alone. Right on, on playing God in our lives. That is our basic bent in sin. Bent in in ourselves.

I've emailed the CS Lewis Institute and hopefully I'll get a response soon, but it seems to me this video correlates better with the study guide posted for Set 1, Lecture III. That means the study guide posted for that is likely meant to correlate with this video. It's hard to say for sure, because they discuss a lot of the same topics. This lecture was filmed before the other, too. He also mentions "The Argument from Prophecy" being next, which as you'll see if Set 1, Lecture 4. So hopefully this will help someone if they're following along and get confused like I was 😅 The video I'm referencing is this: ua-cam.com/video/a9pPqxeyIjE/v-deo.htmlsi=Fz3V9JaTnAjIzanV.

Beware the subtleties of Calvinism- “I turn with loathing from the god of Jonathan Edwards” - George MacDonald Why did Lewis’ “master” say this? Because (bottom line) Edwards believed that God would be perfectly just in sending babies to an eternal hell…. If that doesn’t disturb you- then something is deeply wrong with your “moral compass” I will not (knowingly) eat from the fruit of a poisoned tree (though I acknowledge that Edwards could write exquisitely when focused on the true glories of God - e.g. his sermons on “charity”…)

The message of the gospel - salvation by grace, through faith, and not of any works of man is so simplistic. If we accept it as it stands, our desires change and we live with power over sin through our resultant love for God. Yet men can try to make salvation conditional & dependant on other things.

Dr. Williams does a good job in his analysis, but at 13:34 to 13:38, where he makes this comment about Tolkien that you can't derive real theology I believe is somewhat erroneous. I think that Dr. Williams Evangelical background may not allow him to see the deep Catholic theology that permeates the entire legendarium. Tolkien was not overt In his theology like Lewis was, so his theology is more subliminal and yet deeply Catholic.

Lamentations 5 New International Version 5 Remember, Lord, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace. 2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. 3 We have become fatherless, our mothers are widows. 4 We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price. 5 Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest. 6 We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. 7 Our ancestors sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. 8 Slaves rule over us, and there is no one to free us from their hands. 9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert. 10 Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. 11 Women have been violated in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah. 12 Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. 13 Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood. 14 The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music. 15 Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. 16 The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! 17 Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim 18 for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it. 19 You, Lord, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. 20 Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long? 21 Restore us to yourself, Lord, that we may return; renew our days as of old 22 unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.

Thank you so much for this presentation. I am one of those who came kicking and screaming to the faith half of my lifetime ago. As a former agnostic/atheist, I came to faith through "destabilization", a not so very happy process in my life. I remember clearly sitting in a church, having been invited by someone who cared for me, not wanting to go at all, yet hearing a message from the pastor seemingly directed at me, and only me, convicting me of my sin and lifestyle, yet lovingly urging me to repent and ask Jesus to save me. This Jesus who loved me, and gave Himself for me. It took a while from that Sunday many years ago, but along with attending church and the reading of some very powerful books from the likes of C.S Lewis, et al, I became convinced Jesus Christ is Who He says He is. And that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Thank you Jana, for sharing some of your stories of others who came to faith. They took me back to that day many years ago, when the Holy Spirit of the Living God convicted this one of his sin. I found myself weeping over some of these stories, because I remember my moment so clearly, with so much gratitude for salvation. The memories just came flooding back hearing Jana speak. Thank you Jana, but most of all, thank you Jesus.

I read Art Lindsley’s book “Classical Apologetics” and it is without a doubt the most influential book on my thinking outside the Bible itself. I’ve read it 5 times for the density of its content. I can tell you, if you study it, and understand it, you do not need to read any other philosophy book in order to tango with even the best of atheist philosophers and skeptical biblical critics (though for the Biblical critics, some more historical research may be necessary) but I am floored with the innovative argumentation Lindsley, Sproul and Gerstner present in that book that it is an injustice that university philosophy curriculum is not paying heed to it. It was helpful to watch RC Sproul’s video series “Defending your Faith” in conjunction with the study of that book, but I an glad to now watch Lindsley put out similar content to bring back the superiority of the Classical Apologetic in a day and age where weaker argumentations (presuppositionalism and evidentialism) are sadly getting most of the attention. Thank you Art for your work.

The story goes that Thamus said much to Theuth, both for and against each art, which it would take too long to repeat. But when they came to writing, Theuth said: “O King, here is something that, once learned, will make the Egyptians wiser and will improve their memory; I have discovered a potion for memory and for wisdom.” Thamus, however, replied: “O most expert Theuth, one man can give birth to the elements of an art, but only another can judge how they can benefit or harm those who will use them. And now, since you are the father of writing, your affection for it has made you describe its effects as the opposite of what they really are. In fact, it will introduce forgetfulness into the soul of those who learn it: they will not practice using their memory because they will put their trust in writing, which is external and depends on signs that belong to others, instead of trying to remember from the inside, completely on their own. You have not discovered a potion for remembering, but for reminding; you provide your students with the appearance of wisdom, not with its reality. Your invention will enable them to hear many things without being properly taught, and they will imagine that they have come to know much while for the most part they will know nothing. And they will be difficult to get along with, since they will merely appear to be wise instead of really being so.”

Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross-not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. So we have these three witnesses- the Spirit, the water, and the blood-and all three agree. Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son. 1 John 5:6‭-‬9 NLT Jesus said it was finished then gave up his Spirit. Then the soldier used a spear to puncture his chest, spilling out blood and water, confirming His sacrifice was complete. Now at each human birth, there's blood and water, and when the newborns first breath, the Spirit rushes in providing proof of life. The Gospel is so brilliant! It appears that every single birth celebration foretold and commorates the salvation Jesus securely won for His Father! The eternal life of all God's grace filled children.
